Parallel HR

Debbie Glinnan

Who are you and what do you do? I am an independent HR Consultant who specialises in working with smaller businesses. I help them with all aspects of HR from drafting contracts and documentation, guiding them through grievance and disciplinary procedures, as well as helping them with everyday issues such as maternity leave, sickness and how to motivate their staff. My job is to help businesses identify and overcome any HR issues they are facing. The best part for me is seeing the difference I’ve made by taking away that stress. What’s your history? I set up Parallel HR after working in HR for over 20 years, for both large corporates in London and an independent 4-star hotel. I’m experienced in how to get things done well within a small business and I truly understand how personal every decision feels. In 2015, I wrote a book called “How to Employ Your First 20 People” which is available on Amazon. It’s a clear, easy-to-follow guide on everyday HR issues. It’s also written in bite-sized chapters and is full of lots of practical tips. Who are your customers and how would they find you? My customers come from a range of companies which are big enough to have need for HR advice, but too small to employ their own HR professional. I work with businesses from those looking to hire their first employee through to those with around 80 staff. You can get in touch with me through my website or please feel free to email me. What is the best thing about working with you? I’ve been described as “not a normal HR person”. I’m not sure whether that was meant as a compliment but clients say I am very approachable. I pride myself on setting out the options clearly and then helping them through every step to achieve the best outcome. What’s the best bit of business advice you can give? It costs nothing to say “thank you” to your team like you mean it. Motivated staff can make a big difference to your business. Respect and thanks are huge motivators. What type of animal would your company be? A guide dog – gently leading you around the obstacles to where you need to be. Do you have a slogan or brand message? Parallel HR – working alongside your business.
